Statement of Purpose
The North Carolina Physicians For Midwives (NCPFM) is a community of health care providers and researchers from many specialties who support the midwifery care model. We recognize a woman’s right to choose a home birth and want the best possible care for these women. Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are the national standard for Direct Entry Midwives serving the home birth community and we agree that they should be licensed in North Carolina, as they are in the vast majority of other States. NCPFM also supports increased access to Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) and supports the elimination of physician signature as a requirement to practice, while at the same time encouraging increased collegiality and communication. A key objective of NCPFM is to assemble a network of supportive physicians who recognize a family’s rights of self- determination and to facilitate connecting families with supportive physicians who will care for them. North Carolina Physicians for Midwives was established in 2007 by Henry Dorn MD, a board certified OBGYN from High Point, NC. |
